declawing

Three days ago my cat started tearing up the carpet by the door to the bedroom when we are asleep cause he misses me, and he wants me to sleep on the bed with us. Me and my boyfriend are slightly allergic, however, and so, we do not let him in the bedroom at night. My boyfriend was extremely upset because the cat had torn up a section of carpet approximately 1" x 2" which I can fix with the extra pieces of carpet we have. So, when my cat went in to get castrated today (let's call it what it really is, and I agonized over the decision to get him fixed) my boyfriend told them to declaw him without even asking me about it. I am EXTREMELY against declawing, and I was horrified when I found out what had been done. I went to visit my kitty at the vet cause he has to stay over night, and the sparkle was gone from his eye. My cat has always meowed alot, and the only time he meowed was a pitiful whine when the vet took him away to put him back in his cage. I felt like my heart had been torn out to see him like that, and I do not think I can ever forgive my boyfriend for having it done without my permission. The worst part about all this is that I had been very stern about punishing my cat yesterday when I would catch him clawing the carpet when I was in the bedroom, and he had stopped tearing the carpet. My boyfriend was under the impression that when my cat would put his feet up on the couch and stretch that the cat was scratching the couch. In actuality, my cat was only stretching. My cat has been mutilated and crueling tortured for something he is not even guilty of doing. While he had torn up the carpet for a day or two, he had been trained out of that habit, and so, the declawing was totally unnecessary. If you could have seen my cat today at the vet, you would never ever even think about declawing your cat.
